There's been a lot of pessimism over the last few years about San Francisco. But where the startup-and-venture ecosystem is unconcerned, it's unwarranted. One in five dollars that the venture industry invested in the U.S. last year went to startups based in The City. That's 20% going to startups based within San Francisco's 49 square miles; it doesn't includes those in the rest of the Bay Area. And investors actually increased their investment in San Francisco-based startups last year even as the venture industry as a whole sharply curtailed investments nationwide. A big part of the reason for that: The City has become ground zero for the AI industry, with many of the biggest names — and lots of smaller ones — making their home here.
